This piece is called “Yog-Sothoth Knows the Gate”. It depicts a man, a robed man, reaching up to a … this black orb. And, there’s a couple of ideas going on here. One of which is involved in our story Journey to the Tree of Sorrows, and part of the inspiration though was from a quote from “The Dunwich Horror”. It starts off “Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. “Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate.” And it continues on, but that is another one of my favorite quotes from Lovecraft and it is my favorite quote in that story. I really wanted to explore the journey and also this man seeking out Yog-Sothoth. And so, I wanted the first piece in the series to be of a man, in this journey. This piece is primarily graphite. There is a little touch of charcoal in there. Since it was showing his back I really wanted to put some detail in the robe. You might be able to see little inscriptions and things in there. I really wanted to focus on the hand reaching up to the orb. You know, hands are really important in art. And so I really wanted to try to convey emotion there with his hand and the reaching. And so, it is a little bit different that there is not a giant monster or anything in this piece, but I really like it and I think it really fits well with the Journey to the Tree of Sorrow story line. And I feel it is a good beginning to this series.
