‘It’s a Pittsburgh cultural icon.’ New pictures show proposal for building to replace Wholey’s wareh

MORE CHANGES FOR THE WILLIE’S BUILDING IN THE STRIP. THIS SHOWS THE TRANSFORMATION OVER THE PAST 13 YEARS INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION IN 2014. NOW, THE WILLIE’S BUILDING SITS EMPTY, BUT LOOK AT WHAT IT CAN BECOME. MICHELLE CHAVEZ REPORTS THE DEVELOPER WANTS TO TURN IT INTO A 21 STORY OFFICE TOWER. THIS HAS BEEN UP THERE SINCE I WAS A KID. Reporter: IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. I LIKE THE DEVIL I THAT BLINKS. BEFORE THAT SMILE IS NO MORE. IT IS A CULTURAL ICON AND YOU KNOW, IT IS SAD TO HEAR THAT IT WILL BE GOING AWAY. THE DRIVE INTO THE STRIP DISTRICT WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. IN ITS PLACE, 21 STORY OFFICE BUILDING WILL TAKE OVER. IT IS AT THE BASE OF THE BUILDING AT GRADE LEVEL, THE PARKING AND THERE IS AN AMENITY FLOOR IN THE OFFICE FLOORS ABOVE THAT. Reporter: THIS IS THE CURRENT OF YOU AND WITH THAT NEW DEVELOPMENT IT WOULD MEAN A CHANGE TO THE PITTSBURGH SKYLINE. THAT IS THE NATURE OF DEVELOPMENT, IT IS GOING TO CHANGEÃPERSPECTIVE BUT WE WERE THOUGHTFUL AND I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE IN PITTSBURGH WILL BE PROUD OF IT. THAT CHANGE HAS BEEN MET WITH HOPE AND SKEPTICISM. I HOPE THAT PROGRESS IS TEMPERED WITH A NOTE OF KEEPING OUR CULTURE. I SEE A LOT OF NEW PEOPLE COMING IN SITTING DOWN AND I FEEL IT IS GOOD FOR THE CITY. SO MANY HISTORIC FEATURES IN PITTSBURGH AND IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE ALL GOING AWAY. IS FOR THE ICONIC SIGN — THEY WILL MIX IT UP WITH THE NEW DEVELOPMENT AND THAT WILL BE AWESOME. IT LOOKS LIKE THE DEVELOPERS MAY LISTEN AS THEY FINALIZE CONSTRUCTION PLANS THAT COULD BEGIN OVER THE SUMMER. WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE SIGN LIVE ON IN SOME WAY AND CERTAINLY WE ARE OPEN TO SUGGESTION. DISCUSSIONS ON THIS PROPERTY ARE ONGOING AND SINCE 5 PM THIS EVENING DEVELOPERS HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT POTENTIAL TENANTS
