    Honestly, the focus on realistic graphics makes the experience hard to enjoy.
    Minecraft is popular because it's stylized and the way you interact with the world meets or exceeds the complexity of the art style and the perceived complexity of the world.

    It would be a lot better if the systems were modular but limited: constructed with pieces.

    The systems you have are cool.

    In the same way that a story supports the world a game is set in, so too do the methods of interaction describe and support or break the idea the person has on how the world functions.
    So, you could think of giving the person weak super powers or magic that allows them to do the weird things they can in the game. Telekinesis or something similar. Trying to develop a realistic world for early hardware will not look as good and be much harder than making something even slightly stylized.
