>>>HI EVERYONE. THANKS FOR JOINING US. A FORMER HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER IN GRAND RAPIDS RESIGNED AND FILED A COMPLAINT AGAINST THE CITY ADMINISTRATION. THIS COMES AFTER AN UNAPPROVED JANUARY AGENDA STARTED CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA. REPORTER MALAAK KHATTAB HAS THE STORY.>>WHITNEY LEMMING SALISBURY FROM GRAND RAPIDS CITY COUNCIL IS — WHEN IT COMES TO THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE CITY IN 2004. IN JANUARY AN UNAPPROVED AGENDA MADE ITS WAY AROUND SOCIAL MEDIA THAT CAUSED A FRENZY IN THE COMMUNITY.>>IT HAD LANGUAGE ON IT THAT WAS RATHER — COULD BE EXCITABLE AND WASN’T FULLY REFLECTIVE OF WHAT WE WERE PLANNING TO DISCUSS THAT DAY, MAINLY THE ONE THAT TRIGGERED THE MOST RESPONSE WAS THAT A REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT.>>THE AGENDA ITEM READ DISCUSS SEEKING SUPPORT FOR BRINGING REFUGEES TO GRAND RAPIDS. THAT AGENDA ITEM TRIGGERED A NEGATIVE RESPONSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA, RESULTING IN THE MEETING’S CANCELLATION BY CITY ADMINISTRATORS WITHOUT COMMISSIONERS’ KNOWLEDGE. BEFORE THE MEETING WAS CANCELLED, LEMMING SALISBURY SAYS COMMISSIONERS EXCHANGED E-MAILS ADDRESSING CONCERNS IN WHAT TO EXPECT.>>WE REALIZED THERE WERE A LOT OF THREATS AND INTIMIDATING COMMENTS. OUR CHAIR WAS COURTEOUS ENOUGH TO REACH OUT TO US >>THE EXCHANGE OF E-MAILS LEFT TO AN OPEN MEETING LAW VIOLATION. ON MONDAY, JANUARY 27TH, GRAND RAPIDS CITY ADMINISTRATOR SENT OUT THIS FOLLOWING E-MAIL. IT’S COME TO AMENTION THERE HAS BEEN RECENT COMMUNICATIONS — ATTENTION THERE BEEN RECENT COMMUNICATIONS. AS YOU KNOW SUCH VIOLATIONS COULD POTENTIALLY BE A MISDEMEANOR OFFENSE AND COULD RESULT OF FORFEITURE OF PARTY’S SEATS. THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION HAD A REGULAR MEETING YESTERDAY LED BY CITY ATTORNEY CENTERED ON THE OPEN MEETING LAW VIOLATION.>>[INAUDIBLE].>>I THINK ONE THING THAT CERTAINLY COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER IS HAVING THE AGENDA SENT FOR APPROVAL BY COMMISSION MEMBERS THAT SHARE BEFORE IT REACHES THE PUBLIC BECAUSE THIS AGENDA FOR JANUARY CONTAINS UNNECESSARY INFLAMMATORY LANGUAGE THAT WAS NOT CHOSEN BY COMMISSION MEMBERS. I THINK THAT’S PRACTICE COULD HAVE HELPED.>>THE FORMER HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER SAYS CITY ADMINISTRATORS AND THEIR LACK OF INTERACTION AND THEIR BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THE GROUP HAS LED THEM TO THIS POINT OF CONFLICT.
