I started to rescue dogs because of a dog I owned, and because of a dog that died a long time ago. My mom did not want to help him, she refused to pay for the surgery So I said, well, if I ever have a dog again I will do everything possible so it does not die, I will try to save him So the idea was born After a while, I got a dog called Tonka, and it was with her that I began to understand animals and to train them From there, my friends that could not take care of their dogs gave them to me I slowly began to rescue dogs, but I gave them in adoption unsterilized. I did not know how to properly rescue an animal. I felt sorry for the dog and said: “poor little dog, I’m not going to leave it in the street” Once I ran over a dog chihuahua, I named her Pulga. The vet came to see her and she had nothing, it was just the scare. Everyone was relieved To me, the important thing was to rescue the puppy and bring it with me, Somehow I began to understand that if If you really want things to go well, do them by yourself, do not let others do your work. I began to understand that when you rescue a dog, you need to go to the vet, to provide medical examination, to care of the dog’s health. You should at least leave them in quarantine If your dog is healthy, you should deworm it, vaccinate it, sterilize it to avoid unbearable amounts of animals in the streets, and to avoid them being exploited Afterwards, share about it, so that the dog can find a nice family, which is exactly what we want. So I started rescuing many dogs and I thought, “This will be good, they will be adopted fast.” Well, that did not happen The truth is that not even purebred dogs are adopted fast I have 2 San Bernardos, 4 Great Danes, I have medium to large breed dogs. People usually to say: “I want a small dog, because I live in an apartment.” Unfortunately, the dog does not tell you: Is it true that you live in an apartment? what a bummer! The dog does not talk and does not say those things. The animal accepts you as you are, he does not care if you have money or not. What matters is the love you can provide to him as a human being, as his family. This was how I started to work with this. Now, I have a lot of dogs. That was also how I created the name of the refuge, Tonka y Jack, because of the dog my cousin gave me, that was called Tonka and Jack is the dog that is At the moment I own, more or less, 90 dogs and 8 cats. How many of them arrived here after being mistreated? All of them, both psychologically and physically. People come and say, “You like dogs, can I give you one? I cannot have it, because I do not have time to take care of it.” Well, if you do not have time to take care of it, why did you adopt it in the first place? Many times its the owner’s fault that they come here, many are run over. Here they get rehabilitated, are taken to the veterinarian, they get vaccinated, dewormed, and after all this process they go for adoption. Almost all of them were abused. We used to have a Rottweiler that got mistreated before she arrived here, she died a few years ago I think it was because of a heart attack. She was fine in the morning, In the night, when I arrived, I saw her lying in the bedroom… I told her to move She did not move So I checked carefully and I realized that she was already dead. It was a heart attack. She was incinerated In general, many people think that an animal shelter is a paradise, and to tell you the truth it is not, an animal shelter is a prison: they fight over food, territory, space. When you feed them, they stay in silence But if you don’t give them food for one day, the problem starts.
