2019 Summit Award Winners IEEE Power Electronics Society

♪ [music] ♪ – [Deepak] So there’s 1.1 billion people
in the world who live completely off the electricity grid. The only solution that we have today is to
run the electricity grid to them, and that’s not the right way to do it. You’ll have another 3.7 gigatons of carbon
emissions, which would be an ecological disaster. So we have come up with a competition. It’s a global competition. We call it Empower a Billion Lives,
which is a competition to crowdsource the development of sustainable energy access
solutions that can impact the people at the bottom of the energy pyramid. – [Jane] This is an area of energy access
that we have the expertise and the global reach to start addressing
to find solutions. – [Mike] It allows many of our operating
units within IEEE to work together. There’s over 43 different societies and
councils, and this allowed us to have a central hub for doing
a humanitarian program. – We are seeing teams that are
coming from all over the place. In fact, we had 459 teams
from 70 countries. They went through an online round,
five regional competitions in China, India, South Africa, Spain, and the U.S.. And then we’re going to a global final out
here in Baltimore in October. We are looking for scalable business
solutions. We are looking for business models. We are looking for social impact. So our belief is that this is going to
spawn solutions that are actually going to go down into these communities
and have an impact. – The future of the program is to have
successive rounds. We’d like to see all of our teams continue
to work on their solutions. New teams come in. So for the next two-year round,
we can build on that, have a generational impact. – The thought of being able to help
billions, literally billions, of people, enjoy a better life,
a better quality of life, it’s an obligation we have as non-profit
executives to work this kind of program. ♪ [music] ♪
